Ministry of Transportation Contract #2026-2004

Project Background

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is carrying out improvements to Highway 401 Eastbound from west of Victoria Park Avenue to east of Neilson Road through the City of Toronto.

The Project involves:

  • Repairs to bridges, retaining walls, and culverts, along with roadway resurfacing, highway interchange rehabilitation, drainage upgrades, lighting improvements, and updates to traffic management systems.

  • Construction of an additional Highway 401 Eastbound Collector lane through the Kennedy Road interchange.

  • Relocation of the existing Highway 401 Eastbound Express-to-Collector transfer from its current location east of Warden Avenue to east of the Kennedy Road off-ramp.

  • Removal of the channelized right-turn at the Markham Road off-ramp terminal.

The work along Highway 401 Eastbound extends approximately 10 kilometres, from east of Victoria Park Avenue to east of Neilson Road, including adjacent ramps and connecting roadways.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has awarded the construction contract to Dufferin Construction Company. GHD Limited has been retained and is responsible for Construction Contract Administration. Construction is scheduled to begin in late spring 2026 and will continue for five years, with completion expected in Fall 2030.

These improvements are needed to repair aging infrastructure, improve roadway conditions, and enhance long-term safety and traffic flow for all road users.
